JFRC Music Palate - Edition 2

By Frank Pastula - Arts Editor

Welcome to Frank’s Deep Tracks! On this edition of Dalla Bocca Del Lupo, I’ll be taking you back to the 1980s. From Duran Duran to Hall and Oates to TOTO and Simple Minds, this section will highlight the nostalgia of a time before social media existed. Transport yourself back to the 1980s and let this playlist give you a break from finals while jamming out to the best sounds of a lost decade…

As always, feel free to stop me in the halls; I’ll gladly recommend more music for your liking…or you can see for yourself on my Spotify: frankthetank

The Sounds of 1980

It's 1980 something, and you’re just finishing a day shift at your mall’s record store. As your day comes to a close, the bustle of crowds passing by only hums louder. You watch as multitudes of kids pass by the window of the store; some listening to their walkmans, others talking with friends about the new John Hughes movie or a bold fashion trend. Whether smiling, laughing, or crying, everyone is living life in the moment, immersed in their surroundings. This observation leads you to find something strange: not one person is on their phone. No one is texting, scrolling through instagram, or posing for another snap. People often ask me why I have a fondness for the 80s, and my answer will always be the same: There was peace in the madness.

While the only memories I have of the 80s are through my mother’s teenage job at the local mall, they continue to give me hope that one day our world will be free of the anxiety that is present through our world online today.

This week, I invite you to take a quick break from your phone. Go on a walk, hang with your friends, make some more in Saturday detention, dance with them in the library, take the day off of school, get lost in a museum, hold a jukebox above your head while you serenade the one you love…

Just for once, live your life in the moment like a kid in the 80s. You might be surprised at how good it feels… Oh, and here’s a playlist to jam to along the way.
