Interviews by Gustavo Azevedo
It is a bit overwhelming to get to know everyone. However, you should get to know your RAs. They're here to help you and maybe make you laugh too.
Ben Mielke
What do you like the most about being an RA?
I like helping others get used to living in a new country and also giving recommendations for things to do around Rome.
Do you have any collections? Of what?
I collect one little thing representing everywhere that I go. Ex. a glass statue from Murano, a wooden cow from Switzerland.
What do you like the most about the JFRC?
I enjoy being with a lot of people that like to travel and want to be adventurous. I also love the staff as they are all so nice and happy to see us.
In case of a fire, what three things would you grab before walking out?
Jordan slides, my FFP2 mask, my school ID so I don't get locked out.
Any Rome tips?
Go for daily walks in new neighborhoods. Go to Dolce Maniera, it is a bakery and is open 24/7. Get off the train at Tiburtina train station as it is cheaper to get back to campus and less of a chaotic ride.
Emma Geiser
What do you like the most about being an RA?
So far I've loved getting to build relationships with everyone on the Student Life Team.
Do you have any collections? Of what?
I don't really collect things... I guess I'm just getting really good at the KonMari method.
What do you like the most about the JFRC? The small community of people- it's nice to be able to get to know my professors and the other employees around campus. Take the chance to get to know them if you can!
In case of a fire, what three things would you grab before walking out?
My first dog, my second dog, and a pack of Skittles.
Any Rome tips?
If the gelato is elevated or looks fancy then it's probably not very good quality! Also, take the time to go night monument-ing (but be safe about it).
Liam Broderick
What do you like the most about being an RA?
I like the feeling of moral superiority over the plebeians who we call students.
Do you have any collections? Of what?
I collect the money of those who lock themselves out of their rooms. Also magic the gathering trading cards, the admiration of my superiors, and Lord of the Rings trivia.
What do you like the most about the JFRC? I liiiiivvvveeee for the high school drama.
In case of a fire, what three things would you grab before walking out?
My miniature marble statue of Mao, my Tina Turner cassette collection, and my signed copy of Good Night Moon.
Any Rome tips?
Sit in the olive grove or a park (and make sure you go see where Keats died)
Frank Pastula
What do you like the most about being an RA?
Being bros with the ARDs. Having my own bathroom is nice too.
Do you have any collections? Of what? VHS 80s movie classics.
What do you like the most about the JFRC? Mensa food. #winning
In case of a fire, what three things would you grab before walking out?
Sister Jean, my autographed Randy Jackson samurai sword, my leopard-striped Ferris Bueller sweater vest
Any Rome tips? Don’t try to high-five the bouncer at Scholars, he will literally pick you up and remove you from the premises.
Hannah Rhlady
What do you like the most about being an RA?
I love connecting with people and being a resource/point of support for everyone. I'm always happy to help wherever I can! Free housing and meal plan don't hurt either.
Do you have any collections? Of what? Pajama and sweat sets, I like to look coordinated and comfy on my rounds lol. I just got a new matching sweat set when I was in Venice that I'm obsessed with. My book collection at home is pretty extensive as well, I love reading.
What do you like the most about the JFRC? Being in Rome! I'm taking two fully on-site classes and one that is sometimes on-site, I wanted to make sure I would experience as much of the city as possible while I was here. I am loving getting to know the city. Having a cafe in the basement of the dorm is also a plus.
In case of a fire, what three things would you grab before walking out? If I wasn't already wearing it I'd make sure to grab my jewelry. I wear basically the same stuff every day, I'd feel so lost without it. I'd also be an absolute menace in class if I didn't have my rings to fiddle with all the time. In all honesty though, my set of the original paperback Harry Potter books (I'm counting them as one because it would be dumb to just grab one of them but if I HAD to pick it would be Sorcerer's Stone or Prisoner of Azkaban, they're my comfort books). The third thing would probably be my Nalgene, couldn't leave my emotional support water bottle behind.
Any Rome tips?
Don't forget to get to explore Rome! It's so exciting being so close to all of these incredible countries and traveling is so much easier but we're living in an amazing city with so much history and things to do and see, take advantage!
